Hiding Jewelry Around the House
Hiding Jewelry Around the House

Those that travel often know that hiding valuable or sentimental jewelry in the house is one of the steps taken before leaving for a trip. Its ill advised to take fine jewelry on any trips. Its a pain the pack it in a carryon bag and what to do with it at the hotel is another issue.

Any successful burglar knows the common hiding places. To foil them, hide precious jewelry in plain sight so to speak. Most burglars want to get in and get out. If its too hard to find precious jewelry, theyll most likely move on to their next victim.

Leave Some Jewelry OutThe number one tip is to leave cheap jewelry in plain sight. Wherever jewelry is commonly stored for everyday wear, keep a bunch of jewelry in that same place. Sterling silver while expensive doesnt have much value at the pawnshops, so thats one suggestion along with any cheap obviously costume jewelry.

Hide Jewelry Under CarpetingA house has an unlimited number of corners. Its very easy to pull carpeting up from the tack bar in a corner to hide your jewelry. The carpet padding will need to be cut out in a shape to accommodate the jewelry. Dont cut too much out; the carpet might look weird. About three inches square is a good size. Place the jewelry in a bag and smooth it out so the bag is the same height as the remaining carpet padding. Press the carpeting back in place on the tack bar.

No burglar is going to waste the time pulling up the carpeting at every corner of your home. And, its easy to retrieve the jewelry at the end of the trip. Save the portion of carpet padding that was cut out and it can be put back in place after the jewelry is retrieved.

Hide Jewelry in Plain SightA garage or basement is a great place to hide valuables in plain sight. These two areas of the home are usually so cluttered, it should be easy to split fine jewelry into a few different containers to hide with the junk.

For example, if nails, screws and whatnot are kept in tins on shelves in the garage or basement, place your bagged jewelry in tins as well and cover with a layer of whatever the jewelry is hiding with. If the area is cluttered, the burglars cost/benefit to do a thorough search, just isnt there.

Exercise Care Dont Be a Blabber MouthOf course, the best way to avoid a break in when not at home is to keep the list of people who know the house will be vacant to a minimum. Having someone housesit, if feasible, is also a great idea.
